The Europeans got coffee from the Mocha port in Yemen (Arabs) when they traveled there for trade. Coffee used to actually be seen by the Europeans as a bad thing, sort of like alcohol, because of the affects of its caffeine. Once the popes and monks started using coffee to help them stay up longer so they can worship longer, coffee eventually gained popularity in Europe and spread throughout.
