A deficiency of iodine results in cretinism in children.

Iodine is needed by thyroid glands to make hormones. Deficiency in iodine will disrupt thyroid gland activity, resulting it works harder and the glands might be enlarged and causing hypothyroid. Thyroid glands is needed for growth, disruption in this gland will cause delayed growth (cretinism)
