I need to hurry and go to the library; it will close soon. is your answer because
a sentence needs a main clause, which consist of independent subject and verb and expresses a complete thought.
; is used when connecting two sentences. It is optional to be used in grammar, and if a period was used to separate the two sentences, it would still be grammatically correct.
