Christianity is introduced into the Kievan Rus in the 9th century. In 980 Vladimir I became the Great Prince of Kiev and choose Orthodox Christianity as the religion of his state. At first Vladimir I baptized his 12 sons and many boyars. The people were mainly pagan at that time, so he destroyed many statues of the Slavic pagan gods. The Russian Orthodox Church was created by the princes of Kiev who wanted to establish their positions, so it was dependent on the princes` power.
