When the huge polar caps on mars form every winter, they are made chiefly of dry ice, also known as frozen carbon dioxide.
There are two permanent polar caps on Mars, one in the north of the planet, and one in the south. During the summer, however, these polar caps sublimate, which means that they turn directly to gas and go into the atmosphere.
