The Ghana, Mali, and Songhai empires each grew wealthy and powerful through their trade of many products, but particularly gold. Because of the the empires were so heavily dependent on trade, various circumstances that diminished the empires' trading capacities, including the death of a leader or the strengthening of a rival empire, eventually led to their decline.
