The Igbo people are an African people of present-day Nigeria. In Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe, we learn about the culture of this people. Among the cultural practices he describes is that of the birth of twins.

Igbo people believed twins to be a bad omen, and they considered them supernatural beings that could bring tragedy to the community. Achebe writes that in order to appease the Earth goddess, twins were to be left in the forest to die. He says that "twins were put in earthenware pots and thrown away in the forest."
