Most sailboats and large cruisers have displacement hull. This type of hull push the water aside. Boats with displacement hull are limited to slower speeds. Smaller boats on the other hand, like personal water-crafts and vessels have planing hulls. Planing hulls rise up and glide on top of the water and allow the boat to move faster.
