Why did gender discrimination in the workplace become a major issue only relatively recently?

this became an issue more recently because for decades women and men have been treated as unequal that being said there has also been the idea that gender is no longer what gender is assigned at birth but is what one may identify as. Gender is no longer a factor that is acknowledged when it comes to what ones limits or human capital may be.
