How do modern notions of the immense size and age of the universe affect your understanding of human history?

Basically science tells us that that the universe is very old and that humans have existed only for a fraction of time that the universe has existed. This means that the human history is not as relevant to the universe as it is to us - and that likely humans will become extinct before the universe ends.
