Receptors that are responsible for sensing changes in pressure are called "_baroreceptors_", and they are located in the _arterial walls_.
The term "baro" is derived from the Latin root for "pressure." These are present in specific areas of high blood pressure, such as the carotid sinus (within the carotid artery), to allow the central nervous system to monitor the body's central blood pressure. Since the carotid arteries are a direct offshoot from the largest artery in the body-the aorta- these pressure sensors can alert the brain when major fluctuations in arterial blood pressure occur, thus allowing homeostatic mechanisms to restore the balance.
