The author uses flash backs and creates tension because he knows death is approaching him.The more he speaks about the past , the closer he comes to the end of his days.Because he knows he is about to die, he wants to to go through every memory that put him in that position.Every single action leads to his doom.That is how this condemned narrator creates tension
