f(x) = x^2 + x
f(-3) = (-3)^2 + (-3)
f(-3) = 9 - 3
f(-3) = 6

6, because f(-3)= (-3)^2+(-3) = 9-3. Remember to view f(x) as a 'machine' with a slot. Wherever ther's an 'x' put the value.
