Why was the American army unsuccessful and it's attempt to drive the British out of Canada

Not only were the British expecting a move like that from the american forces, the Canadians themselves assisted in removing the American forces, by raising militia units and harrying them the entire time the moved about, very similarly to what the americans did to the british.
