Option A) He abolished the French legislative councils in a coup. In November 1799 Napoleon was part of the coup of 18 Brumaire and successfully overthrew the French Directory.

After the coup a 3 member Consulate was appointed with Napoleon as its first Consul. This made him the leading political figure of France. He then led various military and diplomatic successful activities which consolidated his power. By 1804 he crowned himself emperor of France in Paris Notre Dame Cathedral
