Batteries, due to their weight, require firm roads to travel upon; and in some instances, it was necessary to construct Corduroy roads or clear the way for them to travel on. Thus the main body must travel first in order to "scout out" and secure the area and prepare whatever roadways would be necessary.for the batteries to be brought up on.
