a^2 + b^2 = c^2.....a and b are the legs and c is the hypotenuse
4^2 + b^2 = 5^2
16 + b^2 = 25
b^2 = 25 - 16
b^2 = 9
b = sqrt 9
b = 3 <== vertical height is 3 ft
