A common literary device to leave readers in the middle of the action is called: Cliffhanger

There are two most common reason to end a movie in a cliffhanger:
- first, is to act as a build up to the sequel of the movie, so the writer could maintain audience's curiosity
- Second, is to end the movie in absurd manner so the audience could make their own conclusion
