As far as I remember most of the very early american settlers in Texas, dubbed the "old three hundred," were first who came from the American southwest (Louisiana, Missouri, Mississippi, Arkansas). They were also called "GTT" that means "Gone to Texas". The one who organized this was Stephen Fuller Austin. He got grant from the Mexican government when he promised to transport 300 american families in Texas.
