The supreme court justices ruled that the government could not restrict independent expenditures by corporations or unions to political campaigns in Buckley v. Valeo. Buckley v. Valeo was very complicated case which lead the Court at two conclusions:
1) Restrictions on individual contributions to political campaigns did not violate the First Amendment;
2) Restriction of independent expenditures in campaigns did violate the First Amendment.
