What effect does first person point of view of "The Yellow Wallpaper" most likely have on the reader

It may have the effect that the reader is actually there, experiencing the same thing the person in the story is.  I know when I read it I felt like I was actually in the story along side whomever it was staying in the room.  Not sure if this answer helps or not, let me know if it doesn't.
