The father is never present in the play except for a mural of him, but he is still important to the story. The father plays the role of being someone Amanda compares Tom to. Amanda is constantly scared that Tom will leave the family just like the father did. The fathers character also shows Amanda's warped view of reality, she claims that all the men loved her and wanted to be with her, yet her husband walked away.
