His main motivation seems to have been to break with the stipulation of the Anglican Church in pre-revolutionary USA that in order to be ordained a would-be priest had to undergo a dangerous voyage to England and stay there for a year for the process to take place so he wanted a church that could ordain its' priests right in the US.
