The nurse practitioner should suspect gonococcal or chlamydial conjunctivitis.
Given that this student has a lot of pus in his left eye (which is definitely not supposed to be there), the nurse can assume either one of those infections are in place. Strong antibiotics should be used at this point and the student should see an ophthalmologist immediately.
