How proteins produced rough er can be secreted into the extracellular environment without crossing the plasma membrane?

Proteins made in the rough ER travel to the Golgi, where they are packaged into vesicles for transport. These vesicles contact the cell membrane and release the protein extracellularly in a process called EXOCYTOSIS.
