Well, he promised the Queen Isabella Isabella I that he'd bring her gold, and spices that's Isabella funded him. After the discovery, Spain became a Global Power as they were struggling against other European powers, and stronger foes.


Also Queen Isabella was a hardcore religious person hence the Reconquista campaign so I believe they also wanted more followers into the Catholic religion.
