He mentions how he was freed by American soldiers and the ideas behind the US people and how he will forever feel gratitude towards not only the soldiers but also the United States people who supported fighting the war and freeing the Jewish population.

In the opening of the speech "The Perils of Indifference" Wiesel makes the narrative viewed from the eyes of a man who was part and survive to some of the genocide and war tragedies to emphasize the important of avoid the indifference and make the audience remember.
