The answer is Each stage produces ATP, but only the first stage occurs in the cytoplasm. Cellular respiration consists of three stages: 1. Glycolysis which takes place in the cytoplasm, 2. Krebs cycle which takes place in the mitochondria, and 3. Electron transport chain which takes place in the mitochondria. During each step, ATP is produced.
