I believe the answer is: they were not defeated in the war..

When two or more nations involved in the war, the losers would always be required to pay back every loss that the winners made in the war.

This would tend to resulted in economic growth for the winners and economic depression for the losers. So, by not being defeated in the war, United States automatically perceived as a great power that could influence other nations.
