the reason why herbivores are important to the savanna ecosystem is: They provide food for the carnivores.
Almost all carnivores on the top of food pyramid only eat other weaker animals as their food source since their body couldn't metabolize plants. Without Herbivore, the Carnivores will start to become extinct.
