Why does Odysseus giving away his name to Polyphemus cause him so much trouble? It slows the men down and three of them are killed. It allows the other Cyclopes to help track him down.. It allows Polyphemus to curse Odysseus. It doesn't; Odysseus is safely on his way when he taunts Polyphemus.

Polyphemus cursed him that he will never get home and that if he manages to get home, it will be with great difficulty couple with the loss of his men.
