Why was the United States concerned when Iraq invaded Kuwait in 1990?

The United States of America have a track record of influencing and participating in foreign affairs.

The US was concerned about the conflict between Kuwait and Iraq mainly because of its interest in Oil from the region.

However, the public justification for getting involved in the conflict was to protect human rights that were being violated by Iraq, claiming that Hussein had possession of chemical weapons and the necessity to protect Kuwaiti sovereignty.
