Why did the red guards want to destroy traditional chinese culture during the cultural revolution?

Mao Zedong believed that traditional ideas contradicted communist ideas.

I believed they wanted to have control over the people. They most likely wanted Chinese tradition to be forgotten so the people wouldn't have a sense of agitation of being attached to their culture and to fight against the red army. I think they wanted the people to be submissive and accept t the new culture so the goals of the new government can easily penetrate.
