What social issues led to the rise of the effort to form labor unions for women

The lowell mill girls would be a prime example here. The textile mill the worked in the owner reduced wages and had them speed up the pace of work. Men had already had their labor unions but women had only just started in the work force leaving owners more opportunity to cut wages and have dangerous work environments.
