Audiences during Shakespeare's time considered witches and curses to be real and therefore much scarier than today's audiences would.

During Shakespeare's time the people believed more in supernatural events, they thought that witches and course were real, this way all supernatural elements were scarier more at that time than now, for example in Macbeth he uses this element, ghost and curses, to create suspense.
