The March to the Sea was a military campaign to take over the port of Savannah.
On their way from the captured city of Atlanta to Savannah, Sherman's troops destroyed military targets, as well as industry, infrastructure and private properties, completely disrupting the Confederacy's economy, transportation and morale.
