If you use Checks and Balances, I would say that the Constitution was a better reflection of the principle. Checks and Balances is the term used to describe each of the three governmental branches working together to prevent one branch from gaining too much power.

The Separation of Powers is the original concept of this form of government. I believe that the Articles of Confederation better outlined this principle because it outlined the functions of the United States government. The Articles of Confederation listed the purpose of having three branches, known as the Separation of Powers.
