Through its statement, the nose itself expresses an explicit distinction between Kovalev’s and its position in the society. Great despair on the lost nose is expressed by Kovalev as he cries to God about his plight. He remarks that losing hands and feet would be more preferable than losing a nose, words which underscored the necessity of the nose to his being a man.
