Is it all right to tell a "white lie" or two in a biography or autobiography in order to protect someone's reputation or to make a story more inspiring? Why or why not

It isn't. The point of a biography to make the most accurate retelling of someone's life. It's not up to you to make them seem like a good person.

While an autobiography is written by one's own self, they do have the ability to make themselves seem better than they really are, since they would be really only be the person who knows of it.
