1776 was the year that the Americans declared independence from Britain. Aka, the Americans adoption of the Declaration of Independence. Guiding from that, a loyalist of Britain more than likely would more than likely not feel overly safe within America, hence they probably would've spoken I have to get on the next boat back to England.
