When an individual's body increases its metabolic rate to compensate for an increased food intake, this is the process known as adaptive thermogenesis.
This adaptive thermogenesis refers to the fact that the levels of energy within a human body vary with regard to the amount of food that a person is eating. If there is more food, there will be more energy necessary to burn those calories and vice versa.
