In the excerpt, Poole and Utterson are comparable characters in that they are both brave.
Both of them are quite courageous given that they went to see Jekyll and demand he see them, even though they knew who he was and what he did and were quite frightened of him. They aren't depressed, or furious or cruel, so the only remaining option is brave.
