In China, food shortages, corruption in government, and high rates of opium addiction led to "The Taiping Rebellion".  Taiping Rebellion (1850-1864): Causes to poor conditions in China after opium wars led to a rebellion of one million peasants. 
Causes of the rebellion included: 
- Famine and food shortages due to a population boom 
 - Lack of faith in the Qing leaders 
 - Government corruption 
 - High rates of opium addiction
