A sodium atom contains 11 electrons and 11 protons. When the atom bonds, say to chlorine for instance, NaCl, the sodium atom will give up an electron to the chlorine. When an atom loses an electron, it becomes a positively charged ion, Na+ in this example. The chlorine gains an electron and becomes negatively charged, Cl-.

Hope that helps!
