Cortés took Moctezuma prisoner and gained control of the city. Cortés would've been killed and Moctezuma would take over his land. At the beginning Cortés gave Moctezuma gifts.

In History ch6 (we may not have the same book) it says a lot about how he was givin a lot of gifts and taken well care of when he came to the empire.
