Basically they rolled over on their backs and let Johnson scratch their belly. They gave him emergency war powers and turned him into another FDR-like pseudo-dictator. He wasn't so charismatic as FDR so they didn't also worship him like fascist socialists worshipped FDR and Kennedy.
