The episode took place when several burglars were arrested in the office of the Democratic National committee located in the Watergate complex of building in Washington D.C.

One of the effects was that The Watergate scandal revealed that the CIA had conducted domestic operations.

A church committee urged to investigate the family jewels and the congress adopted Church's recommendation for greater congressional oversight of the CIA, altering the practices of this important arm of American foreign policy.
