In the past, ships needed to pass by singapore to stopover for ships heading from Europe to Asia and vice versa. Hence it is an important shipping port back then. Geographically, being surrounded by islands of Indonesia and Malaysia, singapore is safe from any natural disaster from sea. But mainly it is the first reason which made Singapore an important sea port for trading
