During the Revolutionary War, Patriots were those who favored American Independence. Those who favored remaining British colonists were called Loyalists.

During the Revolutionary War people in America were split into two groups, Loyalists and Patriots. The Patriots were the colonists who wanted their colonies to be free from British control. The colonists were tired of the taxes imposed on them. As a part of the British empire, they did not feel happy to be part of it because of laws and taxation which controlled the colonist to become free. Some of the patriots were George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Ben Franklin, John Adams and others.
