The U.S. was unprepared for the war with Britain because the army had fewer than 7000 soldiers, and the navy had less than 20 vessels. There was heavy harassment of British shipping. The attack on Canada failed badly. An attack across the Niagra river, and New York resulted in 900 American prisoners of war when New York refused to provide support.

When the colonies first came to America, they were unprepared because they were unfamiliar with their surroundings and did not have the proper resources for a war.

Hope this helps!
